What is the process?

From idea to law: the path to a California State Aroma.

DISCOVER →

The journey toward a California State Aroma begins by identifying scents that authentically represent California’s identity, history, culture, environment, agriculture, and people. Research helps determine which aromas best capture the state's unique heritage and shared experiences.

ENGAGE →

Public participation is a key part of the process. Californians are invited to explore the candidate aromas and share feedback through a statewide survey, helping strengthen the proposal and demonstrate public support.

PROPOSE →

Research, public feedback, and supporting evidence are compiled into a formal case for a California State Aroma. The goal is to create a compelling proposal that clearly shows what the aroma represents and why it belongs in California’s story.

ADVOCATE →

Supporters build awareness and engage with community groups, experts, and elected officials to help move the proposal forward. The goal is to present the proposal to members of the California Legislature and secure a legislative champion who will author and introduce the bill.

LEGISLATE →

Once introduced, the bill moves through California’s legislative process, including committee review, public hearings, and votes in both houses of the Legislature. Supporters may continue providing input throughout this stage.

APPROVE & CELEBRATE

If approved by the Legislature and signed by the Governor, the California State Aroma becomes official law. The selected aroma joins California’s family of state symbols and becomes part of the state's cultural heritage.
